2019, large format archival digital prints
I recently obtained rare permission to photograph Paris from a helicopter. Usually flights are restricted to the outskirts of the city where it is not possible to get straight down shots. This new work is a continuation of my aerial photography over cities, which I began in 2010. Several years ago I began shooting London and Amsterdam, and in May 2019 I flew over Paris.
The photographs are taken from a helicopter with the door off and I am in a harness that lets me lean out of the helicopter to get the straight down shots. From 1000’ above you can see hidden views in shapes, patterns, and geometry not available from the ground, the view the birds see.
I shot these with a new very high resolution medium format 150 megapixel Phase One camera which allows me to make large prints, and to crop for zooming into the images.
A large collection of these photographs will be published as a monograph by Rizzoli, to be released Spring 2021.
